Did you know that soccer is still available for older age groups at ASA?
ASA transitions U13's to the Suburban Friendship League (SFL). The Suburban Friendship League offers an excellent option to keep our older players involved in soccer by providing scheduling against teams from our nearby area. It is usually a seven or eight game season, with about half of the games played at home, and culminates in a tournament each season.
Players register with Alexandria Soccer and are placed onto teams. Teams are submitted to SFL for scheduling. SFL fees are slightly higher to cover the registration cost associated with SFL.
Age Groups and Age Group Rules
SFL currently has 4 age groups, U13, U14, U16 and U19. Current travel players cannot play in SFL. Players can play up, but need an approved medical age waiver to play down.
The oldest player on a team generally determines the age group.
Schedule and Seasons
Please check the SFL website.
Larger teams are the norm in SFL given 11 V 11 play and additional activities of the participants. Eighteen is generally an optimal team size, larger if players have many additional activities.
Given larger team sizes, a head coach and at least one assistant is recommended.
ASA SFL uniforms are available to order through ASA. Jerseys must be numbered which is done through the ASA office. Numbers are reported to SFL and reflected on official rosters.
Game Week Duties
Coaches call opposing coach each week to verify uniform colors and field information. Home field coaches will be emailed weekly regarding field loading and any field duties.
Practice fields are reserved through Peter Kallin, firstname.lastname@example.org. Most teams practice once or twice a week.
An official SFL roster is sent to coaches from the SFL club representative as soon as rosters are set. Jersey numbers must be added as soon as possible. A copy of this roster is exchanged each week with the opposing coach. Unlimited uniform number changes are permitted the first week of games, then only up to 3 in subsequent weeks. Corrections must be submitted to the office by 6pm on the Monday before game day in order to get a corrected/updated roster in time for game day.
Coaches must email scores (and cards if any) after every game to SFL.
Each season culminates in a tournament based on the season’s standings. Teams must opt out of the tournament through the SFL representative. Tournaments are held on Saturday and Sunday (championship games) at locations all over the Northern Virginia area. Home games are not guaranteed. More information on the tournament is available on the SFL website.
Please visit the SFL website, http://www.sflsoccer.org/ for more information regarding the program including directions to fields, age group rules, standings, point allocation, etc.
The Suburban Friendship League (SFL) has been operating since the fall 1990 season providing scheduling services for recreational soccer teams. The league’s charter and decisions are based on whether the result is beneficial for the players. During the spring and fall seasons, the SFL provides scheduling services to between 400 and 450 teams representing almost 30 different clubs.
