Futsal Success at State Cup

Over the weekend eight Alexandria Soccer Association Futsal ID teams competed at the 2nd Annual Virginia Futsal State Cup, hosted by Publix. The format for State Cup is different than outdoor tournaments in that a team’s games are played in one day. The boys competed on Saturday and the girls on Sunday.

We knew the competition was going to be good and were looking forward to a challenging and intense atmosphere for all of our teams. The weekend did not disappoint!

To kick off the tournament for the boys side on Saturday the 2007s, 2008s and 2009s started off strong with three big morning wins.

After a second win of the morning, the 2008s competed in a close championship game against Northern Virginia Soccer Club. With ten minutes left in the second half the boys broke things open to finish strong with a score of 5–1 locking up our first State Championship of the day!

The 2009s, competing in a split 2008/2009 bracket brought home second place based on wins and point differential in a round robin format.

As our 2006 and 2005 teams began their morning, the 2007 boys were working on securing a state title in a tightly played championship game. They were victorious, securing ASA’s second title of the day!

The rest of the afternoon was a whirlwind of back to back games that resulted in two more State Championships, for the 2005 and 2006 teams and a third place finish for the 2004s.

More than winning, we’re proud of how our parents, coaches and players represented themselves during the tournament (both Saturday and Sunday!). “Throughout the weekend our players, parents and coaches were first class. Numerous leaders from the state association, referees, opposing coaches and parents went out of their way to recognize the high quality of play and overall professionalism of our ASA family,” said Tommy Park, Executive Director at ASA.

Our 2006 and 2004 girls represented ASA on Sunday. Both teams played well throughout the day and every game ended in a tight score. The 2006s competed in a round robin group stage format that ended in a three way tie. They won their final game against the team that took home the championship but came in fourth due to head to head scores and goal differential.

The 2004 girls advanced to the championship game in the afternoon and lost 2–4 in a tight tactical match-up. The girls demonstrated discipline and composure to bring home second place.

We’re incredibly proud of the effort, leadership and sportsmanship demonstrated by ASA’s eight teams. “I am so proud of our entire club, everyone — including the coaches, parents and office staff. The weekend successes were an incredible team effort and everyone worked so hard to get us prepared for the tournament,” said Will Hanna, Director of ASA Futsal ID.

Thank you to Axios, our Futsal ID sponsor, and to our office admin Cindy, for ensuring the new jerseys were ready to go for the weekend!

Thanks also to VYSA for a great tournament! The top two teams in each age bracket advance to the Regional tournament in New Jersey— preparation starts now!
