Featured FAQ's
How are practice schedule created?
Our objective is to create an optimal practice environment, considering numerous variables that affect development and a family’s experience. We aim to select days and times that run parallel to the age group’s fall soccer training structure. Variables considered:
- Academy Fall soccer practice schedules
- Cohesion with teams sharing a court
- Age appropriate start and end times
- General family logistics and constraints
Where will teams practice?
Teams will be assigned to one or two facilities consistently throughout the season.
Projected facilities include: Athletic Republic (8 indoor courts), Browne Academy (1 indoor court), Phillips School (1 indoor court), St Katherine’s Church (1 indoor court), and Brenman Park (4 outdoor courts).
Generally, teams should expect one practice indoors and one practice outdoors.
We aim to keep the day and time of futsal training consistent with teams’ fall soccer schedules—though this is not always possible due to the constraints of available futsal courts.
The projected practice dates and times for each team will be communicated by October 4th.
ASA has adjusted the tryout structure and process to create more consistency with soccer teammates throughout the year, to maintain team cohesion as much as possible and avoid unnecessary tryout confusion and stress, and to limit the logistical challenges for families. Academy soccer and futsal coaches begin observing and evaluating ASA players and interested external players during regular soccer training and games throughout the fall season. Players who have signed up for the Player Placement Process will be considered for an Academy Futsal roster spot and will be asked to register for the Academy Futsal program once they are invited to a team.
We focus on creating an experience for each player that coincides, compliments, and supports the annual experiences of soccer and futsal. We aim to create more consistency throughout the year, maintain team cohesion and appropriately place players to optimize their individual development in both soccer and futsal.
While there are differences between soccer and futsal—our coaching methodology, principles and concepts are universally taught in both sports to create a well rounded player. With this in mind, an Academy Soccer player can generally expect to be placed with their peers from soccer.
Depending on how many participants are interested in any given age group, we may make two or more teams.
The Alexandria Futsal program is one of the largest futsal programs in the country! Since its inception in 2015, the program has grown (1,150%) from 6 teams to 75 teams—supporting over 3,000 hours of active play during the winter months. In order to support the growing number of futsal players and remain consistent with our mission as a club, we have continued to explore extensive and creative options for increasing facility and practice space.
Due to the lack of indoor space ASA has access to in Alexandria City we have secured several gyms outside of the City (Browne Academy, The Phillips School, Franconia Rec, George Mason University, St. Katherine’s Orthodox Church, Athletic Republic).
Athletic Republic is unique in that it offers eight high quality courts for teams to practice and play simultaneously. The energetic community feel and tournament-like atmosphere at the facility is both fun and helps prepare teams for tournament and game play throughout the season. We fully understand the challenge the commute can pose and will continue to work on both short term solutions to alleviate stress and long-term solutions to offer options closer to home. We will need your help to advocate for this type of facility to be a priority for our kids. In the short term, we know several age groups setup up successful carpools that eased the travel responsibilities for all families.

Program Information
The Academy Futsal season runs from December – February (some teams may have post season play in the spring or summer depending on qualifications and availability).
The tuition for Academy Futsal is based on a number of variables including; age, tournaments and number of practices. Players who qualify for free or reduced lunch are eligible to receive 25% off tuition. Additional assistance is allocated on a sliding scale, based on household income and members of household.
Player Placement
To maintain consistency and cohesion, ASA is adjusting the tryout structure and process by transitioning to a “Player Placement Process” for current Alexandria Academy players. The goal is to create more consistency with teammates throughout the year, retain team cohesion, avoid unnecessary tryout confusion and stress, and keep the process smooth with limited logistical challenges for families. Players interested in joining a team should register for player placement and our staff will place them on a team.
Due to the smaller roster sizes in futsal (nine to twelve players) and shorter season (three months) the program focuses on placing kids on teams where they can both find success and be challenged during the fast-paced season.

Academy Futsal Director | Will Hanna
The Academy Futsal program is led by Coach Will Hanna. Coach Will has over a decade of futsal coaching experience including several years as a US Futsal Youth National Team Head coach. He has witnessed the development of players who have consistently participated in both soccer and futsal since beginning with ASA’s first age group of futsal participants in 2015! ASA’s current participants born in 2005, 2006 and 2007 were some of the first to participate in both soccer and futsal for Alexandria. We are seeing a record number of these participants continue to play soccer/futsal after high school. The increased repetitions in decision making and the technical demands at a rapid pace have resulted in great development, in addition to enjoyment and success on fields and courts! The creative and hyper intensive environment that futsal offers mimics soccer inside the attacking/defensive third, resulting in jam packed excitement for both players and spectators. Every player at every level should experience the benefits of this sport.
US Futsal Director of Coaching Testimonial:
Futsal—a fast-paced game played on a small-sized court requires players to naturally keep the ball close to their body in order to maintain control. With 10 players on a small-sized court, players cannot hide from the game and are constantly touching the ball which will naturally help develop their ball control, passing, dribbling, etc…but the greatest benefit I see in Futsal, for soccer players, is an improvement in decision-making. The speed of play forces players to solve problems quickly, helping them naturally learn how to read the game, anticipate movements and be aware of their surroundings, and that skill is not easy to teach. Another byproduct of learning to solve problems quickly is creativity. Futsal provides the perfect environment to stimulate and foster creativity.
Soccer has also changed a lot and the game is a lot more physical where all players now are involved in attacking and defending and that transition is something that is constant in Futsal.
I grew up playing on the streets and I’m positive that this was the main source of helping me develop creativity and foot skills before getting into an organized environment. I’m confident that Futsal can be this source of creativity and problem solving for kids today, and help produce the next generation of technical and creative soccer players.
Over the years I’ve received a multitude of feedback from parents and coaches impressed by how much a player had improved their overall game since they began playing Futsal, and I can see a big shift in most clubs where coaches are now seeing the benefits of allowing their players to play Futsal.
